I never fear the length of my role: Sonali

But that’s a thing of a past, Sonali says that she has changed a lot. “I won’t do a film just for emotional reasons anymore. I have been taken on a ride many times. Sometimes I would do a film for some friend or to support someone, but then many of those films are just lying in the cans. Now, I want to work for myself... help myself. I know I have made some wrong choices, but that has helped me get my priorities in order.

I am much wiser today.” Obviously today a lot has changed for the actress. It’s not just the role that’s of prime importance to Sonali now. “Now, I do check things like what kind of promotions they have in mind or when will the film be released,” she says. However, that doesn’t mean that meaty roles have taken a backseat. “I never fear the length of my role. Look at Bride and Prejudice, it was just a cameo, but it was noticed by people world over. Besides, I wanted to work with Gurinder Chadha,” she says.

Besides films, Sonali is all set to bring out a book. “It’s a mixture of poetry and my experiences till now,” she says. The actress is also very passionate about theatre. She says, “It’s something I need to go back to. As an actor you can experiment while doing plays, but obviously it doesn’t pay much. I am grateful to films for giving me the lifestyle that I am living. If I can afford to take a long break today, it’s only because of films.”

Sonali has also tried her hand at some reality shows and has loved the experience. “Television is extremely appealing. I love outdoors, so Fear Factor — Khatron Ke Khiladi was perfect for me. With Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, I got to dance. Television has grown so much today and it’s proved to be a boon for actors,” she feels.

But TV doesn’t seem to be on her agenda right now. Sonali’s forthcoming films include Mohandas, Shadow: The Dark Side of Truth, Love Khichdi, The Man, Rock Shock with Lucky Ali and Camp, along with Marathi films Gandh and Gabhricha Paus. Her next release will be Mohandas in which she will playing a journo. “This is one role I didn’t really have to work hard on. considering I come across journos very often in my profession,” she reveals.

Sonali feels that with the multiplex boon, actors like her will have a lot of interesting stuff coming their way. “The kind of cinema that’s been made today is different. People are not scared of making movies on out-of-the-box subjects. Regional films, too, have got their audience back. I am looking forward to this new phase,” she smiles.
